How the 90/180 rule applies in Portugal
Portugal joined Schengen in 1995 alongside Spain, so the land border is check-free — many visitors combine both countries in one trip, and every day in either counts toward the same 90. Portugal's airports operate EES checks since April 2026: biometric registration on entry and exit, automatic day counting, automatic overstay flags.
Madeira and the Azores count
Unlike some other countries' overseas territories, Portugal's Atlantic islands are fully inside the Schengen Area. Days spent in Madeira or the Azores draw from your 90-day allowance exactly like days on the mainland — don't treat an island hop as a visa run, because it isn't one.

Do Madeira and the Azores count toward the Schengen 90 days?
Yes. Both archipelagos are part of Portugal and inside the Schengen Area, so days there count toward your 90/180 allowance. Flying Lisbon–Funchal is a domestic flight, not a Schengen exit.
Can I do a visa run from Portugal to Morocco or the UK?
Leaving the Schengen Area (to Morocco, the UK, Ireland or anywhere else outside it) stops your clock, but it doesn't reset your allowance. Days only drop out of your count when they age past the rolling 180-day window — the calculator above shows exactly when that happens.
How do I stay in Portugal longer than 90 days?
Portugal's D8 digital nomad visa and other national long-stay visas allow stays beyond the 90/180 rule. Time under a long-stay visa or residence permit doesn't count against your short-stay allowance.
